Thanks for your comment, Blaine! I appreciate it.

The only suggestion I can think of right away is just... listen. Women can benefit a lot from having some space to articulate their ideas - in an environment where they won't be instantly judged. Give them that space and listen to their voices without any ambition to prove yourself.

HI Maggie,

I love the work you've done for HubSpot, and I've learned a ton from you, so thanks for those webinar and books you make!

I'm a man, and I like the fact that more women are involved with tech, innovations, and startups than ever before. I'm all for diversification, but I wouldn't stand up at that conference and hold the mike. What do you suggest an innocent guy like me do to get out of the way but also support women in tech?

Hi magdalene
Great idea! But my concern is I would not want others to see how much I wish to give the recipient.

Thanks for your comment, Susan! I think we are seeing more and more demonstrations of curiosity in working professionals and how they reach out to other fields of study and even drastically change careers. It's a pretty invigorating sensation!

I, too, come from a Liberal Arts background, which seems to have prepared me for little other than writing papers. Because I decided to get into business, I had to ramp up on things I never cared about, like stat (ick) and marketing (hmm). When I got my MBA I had to be a generalist on all things business.

Now that I've been in marketing a while, I find myself wanting to branch into other areas, be it a different topic to write about, or something off the wall, like that animation class you took. At least now it's because I want to expand my horizons, not because I have to!

Thank you for the comment, Eric. It definitely makes sense. That is why I'd remain a strong advocate of pursuing internships while students are still in college. It really helps develop a more kaleidoscopic vision of your interests and how they fit in the world as a whole.

I have been thinking a lot about how traditional education should do a better job of emphasizing the relationships between theories studied in the classroom and real-life work environments. The smartest people at my company are those who take life lessons and truths and apply them to their projects. I should blog about that! ;-)
